The lovely Nikki from Knots & Kisses tells us more about the inspiration behind the shoot…

The inspiration for the shoot started with photographer Amber from Liberty Pearl approaching me as she wanted to create an elopement style shoot at Coombe Trenchard, which is a beautiful arts and crafts house in the mid Devon countryside.

Coombe Trenchard has a grand but really warm and homely feel and is very secluded so the idea of an elopement shoot there immediately appealed. The large fireplaces and warm tones of the interiors and exteriors automatically made me feel that we should create a wintery feel, basing the shoot around the beautiful fireplaces for a ‘Fireside Elopement’.

I was inspired very much by the film ‘Edge of Love’ with lots of chunky knits and loose hairstyles, and so I created a palette of Mustard, Dark Green, pale green and ivory. We wanted the theme to be really cosy and intimate. Lots of beautiful velvet fabrics and chiffony dresses and skirts mixed with chunky knits, tweed and blankets. I wanted to incorporate shots of the bride and groom getting ready for an intimate ceremony for two with a beautiful velvet vow book, specially made for the shoot by Ollie’s Studio, and then a cosy fireside meal with rustic pies on boards and a relaxed jug of flowers. Then snuggling up outside around a fire pit with steaming mugs of hot chocolate with marshmallows, before coming back inside for whisky and brandy and a selection of simple rustic cakes.

The florist Joanna Game created some wonderful floral arrangements which were just the right side of relaxed and informal with beautiful colours and introducing just a hint of blush to carry on the warm tones.

The look for the bride was to be romantic but every so slightly 1930s inspired and so I contacted wonderful bespoke dress maker Ailsa Munro who brought some wonderful pieces for the shoot, including the main ethereal leaf embellished dress which looked perfect.

Make-up and hairstyling by Laura Bukin and Nic Courtney was pretty but also wintery with a warm colour palette for the make up and a loose undone style for the hair. This was added to for the ceremony by a beautiful flower crown which Joanna Game created.

One of the main parts of the shoot was to have some ‘getting ready shots’. I wanted the bride and groom to be photographed just before the ceremony opening love letters from each other to start the day, in their respective dressing rooms.

Food was an incredibly important part of the shoot for me. I really wanted to create a feel that the couple, after getting married, would sit down and relax and indulge themselves with perfect winter warmers. A cosy fireside dinner for two, almost like they were in the perfect country pub, with pies, roasted vegetables and red wine.

Treating themselves to cake still, even though they wouldn’t need a full tiered wedding cake, was also important and so, together with Claire Makes Cakes, we created an idea for a grazing table of cakes. Again, lots of warm colours, the perfect lemon drizzle and some autumnal cherries and brownies. Beautiful grey linen from Kate Cullen set it off perfectly.

We wanted to catch the beautiful golden light outside around the firepits at exactly the right time, giving a cosy end to the couple’s day with chunky knitted jumpers, blankets and wellies and a tray of biscuits, nuts and hot chocolate. Sitting round the fire they toasted marshmallows and then cosied up in front of the wood burner in the coach house for brandys.
