We know we say this every time, but we really, really love today’s new wedding cake supplier, whose bakes often feature organic and locally sourced ingredients – ethical bride alert! The Boho Bakery works with you to create unique wedding cakes as well as cake tables. Bohemian is their style and they offer less conventional, experimental and free-spirited cakes. They really are special and go out of their way to give back to the community – have a look at their ‘The Good Life‘ project where their long term aim is to offer full and part-time roles for young people who have been taken out of mainstream education due to the development of an Eating Disorder. We chatted to founding director Pennie to find out more about what makes The Boho Bakery tick…

What inspired you to start your business?

Ohhh good question!  I absolutely love making things look beautiful, I always have done.  Whether that be a blank page, a dingy room or an edible creation.  I just love transforming the ordinary into the extra ordinary, using my skills to create something that tells a story, be that part of my own or someone else’s.  So when I discovered I had a bit of a flare for baking in general and specifically in creating wedding cakes, setting up Boho seemed like a no brainer.  I still get a massive kick out of turning people’s dream cakes into reality… a very tasty reality.

I also have a dream of my own… you see there are two parts to The Boho Bakery, both focused on recognising and creating beauty, both based in baking but whilst one focuses on Cakes and Bakes, the other side turns it’s attention to the people creating them.  I discovered my passion for baking through a rather unlikely set of circumstances.  When I got my first gig as a baker I was, and had been for quite some time, suffering from anorexia.  Working with food was a massive part of my recovery and it is my dream that one day, The Boho Bakery will be able to offer workshops, apprenticeships and support programs to young people suffering from eating disorders and other mental health issues.  So to summarise, more simply… what inspired me to start The Boho Bakery? – a desire to create beautiful things.

How are you different from any other similar suppliers?

I think one of the things that makes Boho different from other suppliers is the absence of fondant icing.  I admire sugar craft, it is such a skill, but I have established The Boho Bakery to focus on other types of icing – to break from the wedding cake norms – and use all natural flowers and berries because, well, I just think that old mother nature nails it every time.

Another thing that makes us stand out is our consultation process… I always like to meet up with the couple and talk through all their likes and dislikes when it comes to styles and flavours.  I work with the lovebirds to develop and design a cake table that is a true reflection of them.  And, once all the decisions have been made, I do a little sketch of the cake or cake table to help the couple further imagine what it will all look like on their big day.

(I’ve attached an example of a sketch so you can see what I mean..)

What do you love most about working in the wedding industry?

That’s easy… the people!  The couple’s themselves, obviously, and my fellow Wedding Industry workers… everyone I meet is all about the love.  There’s no beating it on the feel good factor!

What would be your number one piece of advice for a bride to be?

Make it your own.  Pure and simple.  Make sure that your wedding is what you and your fiancé want it to be.  If you want frills, hell buy a time machine and take a trip back to the eighties.  If you want to get married in a forest with woodland animals as your ring bearer and bridesmaids… do it!  Just make sure that your big day is a celebration of you guys as a couple, all that you stand for and a reflection of the life you want to lead.

Tell us about the best thing you have seen at a wedding you have been to?

Oh now, that’s a toughy!  I have been fortunate enough to attend some pretty awesome weddings.  I was going to ask if I could cheat and say my top 3 but I will pick.  In terms of ideas that I would pass on to Brides and Grooms… the best thing I’ve seen at a wedding would have to be – tree centre pieces… table top trees, obviously, it was like having an enchanted forest on every table… you got lost in another world, a dream world, so Hagop and Lauren!
